The Hope Luau

Ua Ola Loko I Ke Aloha — Love Gives Life Within

Hope partners with the Hawaiian cultural school Halau Ho’omau I Ka Wai Ola O Hawaii to host an annual Luau. The Luau features authentic Hawaiian food, Hawaiian dancers, crafts, and activities for children! There is also be a silent auction with many great items and services available.

This year’s Luau will be held at Hope Church on September 12, 2009, from 4:00 to 9:00 pm. The rain date will be September 26. Save the date and tell your family, friends, and neighbors to join us for this wonderful event! It’s like going to the islands without the airfare. All proceeds from the Luau go to support our mission efforts.

Hope’s Cultural Ties to the Hawaiian Community

Hope Church’s Luau is a time for members and friends to enjoy an evening of feasting and fellowship, but it is also part of our larger interest in Hawaii. Our missionary heritage dates to the early 19th century. In 1819, Christian missionaries from Congregational churches (precursor to our UCC denomination) in New England traveled to Hawaii to share the good news of the Gospel.

A descendant of those missionaries, Harold Bailey, was a long-time member of Hope Church until his death in 1999. Hope Church continues to celebrate the relationship those first Congregationalists created with the Hawaiian people in the annual Luau celebration.

We honor our cultural ties to the Hawaiian community:

  • by sharing Hope’s campus each Saturday with the Hawaiian cultural school Halau Ho’omau I Ka Wai Ola O Hawaii.
  • by inviting members of the Hawaiian community to worship with Hope, including preaching and sharing Hawaiian culture during services.
  • by celebrating Hawaiian culture and traditions with Hope’s annual Luau.

Aloha!
