Bringing Hope to Pride

20090611pride-1220090611pride-19

Hope had a great time at Pride this year.  We had 12 people dancing to Abba, YMCA and other upbeat tunes, throwing candy and bringing our message of love and acceptance to the LGBT community in the parade on Saturday evening.  The parade watchers cheered as they saw our banner and signs.  Many gave us high fives as we passed.

On Sunday we shared a booth with three other UCC churches at the Capital Pride Street Festival.  We were booth #1 again this year, and our rainbow buttons and signs about marriage equality brought a lot of visitors to our table.  It was great to be able to share the UCC tradition of social justice and leadership in the struggle for equal rights for the LGBT community.

Thanks to all who participated in the parade and festival.  Special thanks to Laurie and Doug James for setting up the festival booth on Sunday morning and Daniel Klaus for purchasing the candy.

If you missed the fun this year, make sure you join us next year on June 12 and 13 when our emphasis will be “There’s Hope in Virginia!” and “Hope values all families equally.”  We’d love to see some kids in the parade, too!

It’s worth the journey to Hope!

Koinoinia Needs Volunteers Wednesday, July 1

Opportunity to Help with our Local Missions Efforts:  Volunteers Needed to help Koinoinia and Feed the Children

Koinoinia is thrilled to announce a tremendous opportunity to partner with Feed the Children, to further assist our families with food and personal hygiene products!  Koinonia has been selected to be the recipient of a semi truck-load full of boxed items for 400 families, sponsored by an anonymous donor, with the intent of helping the needy in Alexandria.  This truck will come from Feed The Children, located in Oklahoma, and will be delivered and unloaded on a one-day event, Wednesday, July 1 between 3-6pm.

Koinonia has already qualified hundreds of families who have been receiving assistance from us.   We will be distributing the items on Wednesday, July 1 between 3pm-6pm at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Because of the large number of families that will be participating in this effort, Koinoinia is seeking additional volunteers to asssist with this effort between the hours of 2pm - 7pm on July 1.  Interested volunteers should contact Koinonia at (703) 971-1991.

Sunday School Volunteers and Assistants Needed for the Summer

Hello Everyone,

I hope that everyone’s summers have gotten off to a good start.  Generally I send the email that you are about to read to the Christian Education Team only but in sending this to the entire congregation I am hoping to recruit some new members to our team. We would love to see some new faces in our Sunday School rooms this summer.

If you have ever wanted to get involved in Sunday School or any other Christian Education program now is a great time to do so.  The following information is specific to Sunday School but if this is not your calling and you would like to get involved in Christian Ed in a different way please feel free to talk to Holly or myself.
It is that time again.  Time to do the schedule for Sunday School!  Here is how Sunday School is going to work this summer.  We will continue with the same format as the rest of the year with Sunday School being every other Sunday and childcare for the younger kids on off-Sunday School Sundays.  We are going to combine the two classes for the summer because attendance usually goes down significantly.  This means that I will need 2 people downstairs each Sunday.  On off Sundays we will also be asking one older child to help out with Sunday School as well.
Our thoughts for summer Sunday School were to play Biblically-based games and activities.  To begin the summer I will put the remainder of our curriculum in a binder.  You can feel free to pull from this curriculum or do a different activity all together.  The summer is a much more open and laid back time for Sunday School.  I am going to try to supplement this with some activities and games, but I could definitely use input from all of you.  If you know of any good games, art projects, or activities please let me know and I will compile them all.

Below you will find the Summer Sunday School schedule.  Please sign up for any days that you are able to help out and let me know by Monday June 29th so that I can finalize the schedule.  If I don’t hear from anyone for specific days I will assign them to members of the CE team and I will send the finalized schedule back out.

Thank you so much for your hard work and support to this vital ministry in our church.

In Christ,
Sarah Crisman, Christian_Education@hopeucc.org
